2010 Nebraska Law Ride Wrap Up

Tuesday, May 11, 2010
Omaha, NE

2nd Annual Nebraska Law Ride a Success

With a cold start to the day we still had approximately 115 motorcycles transporting over 150 individuals.  The riders made their way from Omaha, to Lincoln, and finally Grand Island, in a show of support for 130 law enforcement officers who gave their lives in the line of duty.  The result of the ride:  $3,500 was raised for the Law Enforcement Memorial project in Grand Island.

With outstanding cooperation and support, police escorts in Omaha and Lincoln set the tone for a safe ride.  We also had escorts from Douglas, Seward and Hall County Sheriffs Departments.  The riders made the 155 mile trek without incident.  Riders spoke very highly of the ride, some saying, "I've never been on a ride where we didn't have to stop for red lights and stop signs, that was cool!".

The Iron Warriors MC of Nebraska was pleased to have the help and support of other Law Enforcement and Military Motorcycle Clubs.  The Reguladores Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, Americas Guardians MC and Blue Knights MC played an important role in the ride by manning registration tables and picking up needed supplies in Lincoln and Grand Island alongside members of the IWMC.  Iron Warriors from Central Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota were also in attendance;  Approximately 12 Reguladores LEMC members made the trek from Texas to join us.  The day proved to be a great opportunity for these clubs to build their relationships and work in support of peers who have gone before them.

As the group of riders made their way into Fonner Park, home of the LE Memorial, they were greeted by members of the Grand Island Fire Department who were flying the flag from one of their ladders....a beautiful site.  Though a cold start, the day turned out to be beautiful with temperatures in the low 60s.  It was a perfect day to ride, be with friends, and to honor those friends, family and community members who chose to serve and protect and paid the ultimate sacrifice in doing so.

Thank you to all who came out to support the cause.  We hope to see you again next year!

Law Ride set for Saturday

Anyone traveling between Omaha and Grand Island on Interstate 80 on Saturday might come across an extremely long line of westbound motorcycles.

The riders will be participating in the second annual Nebraska Law Ride, which will kick off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Omaha at Dillon Harley-Davidson. The group will stop in Lincoln at Frontier Harley-Davidson and plans to leave there at 12:45 p.m. for Grand Island, said Jeff Rotherham, one of the ride's organizers.

The riders plan to arrive at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Memorial, 409 E. Fonner Park Road in Grand Island, at 2:15 p.m., with a final stop at Harley-Davidson Central, he said.

The ride is being hosted by the River City Chapter of the Iron Warriors Motorcycle Club to raise money for the memorial, which honors Nebraska law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the line of duty. The memorial was dedicated on May 11, 2009.

Last year's Law Ride welcomed more than 200 individuals on 135 motorcycles and raised more than $4,300. The money raised this year will go toward paying off the memorial and/or maintaining the site, Rotherham said.

"It was an awesome sight last year," he said of the 135 motorcycles driving to Grand Island.

The Iron Warriors Motorcycle Club is a nonprofit organization of active-duty and retired law enforcement officers, firefighters and other members of public safety agencies. Members are dedicated to providing assistance and support to communities, departments and the families of fallen police officers and/or firefighters.

The ride is open to the public, and all types of vehicles are welcome, he said.

"We invite everyone to come out and support law enforcement," he said.

eMail received Monday May 4

Subject Line:  Nebraska Law Ride - May 9

Gentlemen:

Good afternoon - I hope this day finds you well. I saw an article posted on the Lincoln Journalstar website regarding your upcoming ride to benefit the Nebraska Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial for this Saturday. First and foremost, thank you for putting your lives on the line everyday to protect the public. I am a survivor of a fallen officer. My father, Franklin Furrer died in the line of duty when my mother was seven months pregnant with me, therefore, I never had an opportunity to meet him. I have been to the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial in DC and was witness to the dedication the year my father's name was placed upon the national memorial. The Nebraska Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial has been a long time coming and I am proud to say that I have been able to assist with the state committee. Thank you for kicking off National Peace Officer's Week with a great tribute and ride.

I am going to do everything in my power to make it to the Frontier HD in Lincoln, as it is just a couple of miles from my home. I am also going to pass on the word to fellow riders and friends to support this great cause. I look forward to meeting members of the Iron Warriors Group.

Thank You!

Welcome
